A Brief History of Magic: The Gathering

Magic: The Gathering (MTG) was created in 1993 by mathematician and game designer Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast. Designed to be portable, strategic, and endlessly replayable, Magic became the world’s first successful trading card game. Its innovative concept—players building customized decks from a shared card pool—revolutionized tabletop gaming and laid the foundation for an entire genre.

In its early years, Magic grew rapidly through frequent card expansions that introduced new mechanics, strategies, and fantasy lore. Sets such as Arabian Nights, Ice Age, and Mirage expanded the game’s universe and deepened strategic complexity. Organized play also emerged, with tournaments and the Pro Tour fostering competitive communities worldwide.

Over the decades, Magic evolved alongside its audience. Wizards of the Coast refined game balance, introduced new formats like Commander and Modern, and improved accessibility for new players through beginner-friendly products. The game’s rich multiverse storytelling, spanning iconic planes like Dominaria and Ravnica, further strengthened player engagement.

The digital era marked another milestone with Magic: The Gathering Online and later Magic: The Gathering Arena, allowing global play and introducing the game to a new generation. Today, Magic thrives as both a competitive esport and a beloved hobby, attracting millions of players across cultures and continents—proof of a game that continues to evolve while staying true to its strategic roots.
